In my early twenties, I was burdened with self-limiting beliefs and a narrow outlook on what was achievable. I used to think that talents were innate gifts bestowed upon a lucky few. For instance, I believed that someone’s ability to speak well was purely a “gift of gab.”
Another absurd belief I held was that earning $3,000 at the age of 30 with merely a $100 yearly increment was acceptable. I also thought that making a real impact to the community was reserved only for the wealthy and elite.
With these myths floating around, it's no surprise that many of us feel content to lounge on the couch, leaving the world’s problems for someone else to solve.
It was a period of my life where I was filled with thoughts like:
"I'm not good enough",
"I don't have what it takes",
"I don’t have enough experience",
"I am not as good as others",
"I don’t have talent".
You see, our minds are remarkably creative when it comes to fabricating lies, and these lies can be so persuasive that they become our reality.
Unfortunately, we often accept these narratives as truths. Yet, here’s what I've learned: the only thing more crazier than these beliefs is the control we give them over our lives.
Thanks to motivational speakers like Tony Robbins, Robin Sharma, Oprah Winfrey, and a few well-meaning mentors, I managed to reclaim my confidence, overcome these self limiting beliefs and reframe my perspective on life. I began to see life as abundant and filled with limitless opportunities.
Sure, there are days when those old lies (self limiting beliefs) try to creep back in, but I have developed foolproof strategies to overcome them. Now, I can confidently say that when life gives me lemons, I make lemonade. Additionally, I add my favourite coconut juice to it.
Gradually, I began to believe more in myself, developed a strong willpower, and, best of all, became the best version of myself beyond my imagination. Some of my humble achievements include:
1. Being the 1st Singaporean to win the Book Best New Award (Non Pro) at 2019 ‘Prix de la Photographie’ Paris Photo Prize
2. Publishing seven photobooks, six of them award-winners, and raised more than $30,000 for a local charity through these photo books
3. Advocating for Strong Families and the Filial Piety value
4. Entered the Singapore Book of Record for a physical feat
5. More..
Many media outlets have graciously acknowledged my efforts and luminaries such as Mr Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social and Family Development, as well as the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (Singapore) and Dr Michele Borba, Best Selling Author have positively reviewed my photo books.
Yet, through all the attention and buzz, my sincere wish remains the same: to contribute to a brighter, kinder world, one snapshot, one piece of writing, and one act of goodwill at a time.
Imagine what could happen if we started challenging all these self limiting beliefs instead of letting them hold us back.
Imagine stepping into the realm of endless possibilities.
Imagine we can realize our fullest potential and be the best version of ourselves.
Imagine waking up every day feeling motivated.
